Gulmarg | Kashmir - The heaven on Earth

Someone has rightly said, if there's heaven on Earth, its here, its here, its here!!

They say, if there's a piece of heaven on Earth, it's right here, it's right here, it's right here!!

Welcome to Gulmarg – not just a town, but a hill station, a skiing haven, and a charming area in the Baramula district of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Nestled in the Pir Panjal Range of the western Himalayas, Gulmarg is a mesmerizing destination that promises an extraordinary experience.

Our journey was nothing short of fantastic, meticulously planned to explore the beauty of Gulmarg. We embarked on a thrilling route from Delhi to Jalandhar, Jammu, Srinagar, and finally to the enchanting Gulmarg and Pahalgam, before heading back to Srinagar and Delhi. Srinagar, the capital city of Jammu & Kashmir, serves as the gateway to this magical place and is easily accessible by road and air.

A mere two-hour drive from Srinagar, the road to Gulmarg unfolds a picturesque panorama as you ascend towards the majestic mountains. Accommodation options in Gulmarg are limited, with a few hotels and cottages available, though they tend to be on the expensive side. Planning your trip well in advance is advisable, or you can opt to stay in Srinagar and embark on a delightful day trip to Gulmarg.

Gulmarg in winter is a snowy wonderland, and packing warm clothes is a must. Vendors may suggest renting winter gear for the Gondola ride, but it's worth considering whether you truly need it. However, don't forget to grab a pair of gum boots for strolling in the snow, which typically cost around Rs. 100-130.

Gondola, the highlight of Gulmarg, offers a breathtaking ride at different levels:

  • Level 1: Rs 740 per person
  • Level 2: Rs 940 per person

Regardless of the time of year, the weather in Gulmarg is unpredictable, and the Gondola operates only in clear conditions. If you're aiming for the majestic Affarwat peak, make sure to purchase a Level 2 ticket.

We visited in December, experiencing the peak of winter with temperatures dropping to -11°C at night and -5°C during the day. Walking on snow can be tricky, so watch your step!
